When Tim McGraw debuted in the early '90s, few would have predicted that he would eventually take over Garth Brooks' position as the most popular male singer in country music. Yet that's exactly what he did, thanks to a string of multi-platinum albums, a high-profile marriage to fellow superstar Faith Hill, and Brooks' own inevitable decline. His sound epitomized the strain of commercial country that dominated his era: updated honky tonk and Southern-fried country-rock on the uptempo tunes, well-polished, adult contemporary-tinged pop on the ballads. Helped out early in his career by several novelty items, McGraw simply wound up cranking out hookier hits on a more consistent basis than any of his peers. By the late '90s, he was not only a superstar among country fans, but a mainstream celebrity with a large female following. - AMG
"For me, making a record isn't just going in and having fun," says Tim McGraw. "It's going in and digging and digging and trying to get what's inside of me out, and never quite getting there. And that's what keeps you going back and trying again."
This dedication to honesty and integrity has helped make McGraw not just a country music superstar, but one of the biggest names in all of music today. In his record-shattering career, McGraw has sold over 40 million albums, and dominated the charts with 30 Number One singles. Since the release of his debut album in 1993, he has won three Grammys, 14 Academy of Country Music Awards, 11 Country Music Association Awards, and 10 American Music Awards, while simultaneously maintaining a parallel career as a successful actor.
Now, with the release of SOUTHERN VOICE—his tenth studio album, and his first in over two years—Tim McGraw is extending his achievements even further. Recorded with his longtime producer, Byron Gallimore (Faith Hill, Sugarland), the disc's twelve songs represent a new level of depth and intensity for the singer from the small town of Start, Louisiana; they tell unforgettable stories of lives lived and lessons learned, and reveal a man staring down what it means to be a father, a husband, a Southerner.
Tim will perform an exclusive “Live on Letterman” webcast concert from the Ed Sullivan Theater on Monday, Oct. 12, following the taping of his appearance on the LATE SHOW with DAVID LETTERMAN.
This CBS Interactive Music Group event will be promoted across and broadcast on several CBS assets, as the concert will be streamed on the LATE SHOW website at CBS.com (www.cbs.com/late_night/late_show) that evening at approximately 8:00 PM, ET/5:00 PM, PT, and will also be featured live on-air and online on CBS RADIO country music stations across the country. Additionally, live and on-demand video of the concert will be available on CBS properties including Last.fm, mp3.com, TV.com, etonline.com and theinsider.com, as well as the CBS Television Station websites, among others.
This exclusive performance is the fourth time the LATE SHOW has used the historic Ed Sullivan Theater as a concert venue – Pearl Jam performed a live webcast concert for the LATE SHOW and CBS.com on May 4, 2006, Elvis Costello and the Imposters did one on May 14, 2007, and Paul McCartney performed from atop the Ed Sullivan Theater marquee during his webcast concert on July 15, 2009.
Additionally, McGraw will perform two nights on the LATE SHOW, Monday, Oct. 12 and Friday, Oct. 16 (11:35 PM-12:37 AM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. On the Friday broadcast, McGraw will also sit down for an interview with Letterman.
During the concert, McGraw will perform songs from his new album, Southern Voice, which drops Oct. 20, as well as some of his classic hits during the webcast. He has sold more than 40 million units and dominated the charts with 30 #1 singles. He’s won three GRAMMY® Awards, 14 Academy of Country Music Awards, 11 Country Music Association Awards, 10 American Music Awards, three People’s Choice Awards and numerous other honors. His concert tours consistently rank at #1 and he and wife, Faith Hill, hold the record for the best selling consecutive multi-year North American tour in country music history for their “Soul2Soul Tour” outings in 2006 and 2007.
