Pet Vaccinations
A simple way to keep them healthy

Besides keeping a license on your dog or cat, vaccinating your pet helps keep them disease free. It is easy, simple and relatively inexpensive.

All puppies and kittens need a series of vaccines beginning at six weeks of age. This activates their immune system. After the series is complete (usually three to four boosters, three to four weeks apart), a booster once a year will keep them relatively disease free.

If your dog or cat is an adult and you don’t know if they have been given any vaccinations, it is best to start at the beginning. Adult dogs and cats need an initial vaccine followed by one booster, then once a year after that to keep them protected.

The most important, basic vaccines are:

  • A rabies vaccine for both cats and dogs is needed at four months of age. This vaccine is mandatory in order to license your dog or cat.
  • For cats a 4-in-1 is recommended beginning at six weeks of age if possible.
    • It includes: Feline panleukipenia, Feline viral rhinotrachelitis, Feline calicvirus and Chlamydia.
  • For dogs a 6-in-1 is recommended beginning at six weeks of age if possible.
    • It includes: Canine parvovirus, Canine distemper, Hepatitis, Infectious Laryngotrachetitis, Canine parainfluenza and Leptospirosis.

Every year dogs and cats die from diseases that are easily preventable. Call your local veterinarian and ask if they provide any low-cost vaccine clinics. You may be pleasantly surprised to find out many of them do. It will save you time and money. The best thing you can do for your pet is to keep them up-to-date on their vaccinations and make sure they are wearing identification at all times.

This public service announcement is brought to you by the Inland Valley Humane Society: a private non-profit organization dedicated to protecting, sheltering and providing medical care to stray and abandoned animals. The Inland Valley Humane Society offers low-cost vaccination clinics monthly. To contact the Inland Valley Humane Society call 909-623-9777.
